Incorporated in 1829, Waterville Valley is an island in the middle of the White Mountain National Forest, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and comprised of about 42,000 acres, of which 41,300 are preserved National Forest land.

A   Mountain Escape

                from the very beginning . . .

After World War II, a small ski lift was built behind the inn, ushering in a new chapter in Waterville Valley's storied past. Visitors were drawn to its winter offerings as well, and in 1965, the Waterville Company, Inc., headed by former olympic skier Tom Corcoran, was formed. Tom oversaw the expansion of the resort to include the Mt. Tecumseh Ski Area, soon host to numerous celebrity races and World Cup events.  One of the nation's oldest ski clubs, The BBTS was formed here, training past and future olympians.  And the earliest pioneers of aerial and acrobatic skiing experimented, perfected and displayed their crafts here, reason why Waterville Valley is considered the birthplace of Freestyle Skiing.

Its isolated setting yet close proximity to railway and roads proved an ideal setting for families looking for an escape in the mountains.  It firmly gained its reputation as a summer destination with the construction of the Waterville Inn, a full-service country inn that catered to the valley's growing popularity.

Today Waterville Valley is one of New Hampshire's premiere destination resorts, known for its challenging and varied ski terrain as well as the summer offerings that first attracted visitors hundreds of years ago.
